Chainsaw Maintenance and Use

We had seen in a previous article how to choose a chainsaw, let us see today’s maintenance chaxtonneuse and use. You use domestic (small crafts, cutting firewood …) or a little more intensive your chainsaw. But do you know the organs that compose it? The control of these allows you to better maintain your chainsaw and especially to work safely. For the realization of this article, I want to specify that I took again / reformulated the remarks and took again the very beautiful illustrations of an article of the “echo of the forests” n ° 30 co-written by Didier LAJUJOUZE and Pascal MATHIEU, published in January 2000. Go, follow the guide!

Several types of guide exist:

The satellite guide: its end is reinforced with a heat resistant alloy. Maintenance is simpler than other guides, but the friction remains important, the wear of the chain is faster.

How to choose the guide?

Every guide is not suitable for any chainsaw, you get guide while buying chainsaw online. With each chainsaw its guide which, according to the weight of the latter, will have a different length. Once your guide is in place, put your chainsaw on a flat surface, if it is in balance, its good! If it goes backwards, it is because the guide is too short, and if it goes forward, it is too long.

The tension of the chain

Correct tension in the chain of your chain saw is essential. A relaxed chain may derail. Conversely, too tight, your chain will wear out much faster. Prefer to adjust your channel when it is “hot”, that is to say after use, because it will relax more easily. Be sure to make sure that your equipment is in the “off” position.

To tighten the chain, place your guide in the up position. Then, adjust the tension using a screw that changes the position of a pin. The latter takes place in a hole at the base of the guide. Tension is greater on

a guide pinion than on a guide satellite.

By pulling on the chain, you must be able to mid-guide the bottom of the drive link.

Maintenance of the guide after each use for assured longevity

To obtain a uniform wear of the guide, turn it over after each use, then with a curette

1- To obtain a uniform wear, the guide must be returned every day.

2 – Clean the groove with a curette.

3 – Unclog the lubrication holes.

4 – File the burrs.

5 – Grease the idler gear and check its condition.

Be aware that the guide must be changed when the rails are worn or damaged.

This is the most important organ in the power supply of the chainsaw. During your work and especially during your tree cutting, you will position your chain saw in all directions, and that is why it is equipped with a membrane.

These basic settings must be checked: tighten all the screws thoroughly, without forcing, and unscrew them by the number of turns recommended by the manufacturer. Finish with an adjustment to the ear. Adjusting the idle screw prevents the engine from stalling or rotating too fast.

The launcher

It consists of a rope wound on a pulley. Pawls cause the motor to move. A return spring causes the rewinding of the rope. The springs and the rope can break. To avoid this, look for the compression point before pulling the thrower, and do not pull the rope all the way down.

Security is paramount! Do not neglect it! Be sure to frequently check the items that are essential and the effectiveness of its following:

1 – The anti-vibration system or “silent bloc” which helps to reduce the vibrations of the machine.

2 – The chain brake: it blocks the chain in case of rebound and is activated by the front hand guard.

3 – The anti-return which blocks the chain in case of breakage.

4 – The hand guard that protects the back hand in case of breakage of the chain.

5 – The double control which avoids a sudden acceleration during falls or displacements.

6 – The security chain: safety links that limit rebounds.
